In the Ravenous Dark starts with a pretty epic prologue, where we're introduced to our main character, Rovan, as a young girl, forced to hide and watch as her father is captured and killed by the blood mages who serve the king. The ending was perfect and while I'd really enjoy a novella, I think things wrapped up pretty well. So, I love that this book is a standalone. I'm really tired of series, especially really long series which are feeling a bit tedious right now as I'm swamped with work and don't have as much time to read as I used to. I've also seen several people commenting on the fact that queer characters die in this book, but pretty much all the main characters are queer, and things happen in a way that I don't for a second think this is an attack on queer identity.Īt the moment, standalone books are really my thing. So, without trying to spoil the book, I just want to say that this book doesn't have a tragic ending and 'murder/death aside' a lot of the warnings above are quite mild and just made the story more powerful. TW: Murder, death of loved ones, violence, blood, gore, body horror, alcoholism, forced marriage, threat of rape/abuse, enforced gender roles.Ī note before I get started: I always try to include TW/CW for any books that I read as I know they're really crucial for a lot of people BUT I know if I'd seen the warnings above before opening this book, I might not have read it and honestly, that would have been awful since this book turned out to be fantastic.

He used his first advance to go traveling and after that hardly stopped longer than it took him to write another book. It was published by Random House when he was 26. Walter Farley began to write his first book, THE BLACK STALLION, while he was a student at Brooklyn's Erasmus Hall High School and Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania, andįinished it while he was an undergraduate at Columbia University. Consequently, I received a good background in different kinds of horse training and the people associated with each." He switched from runners to jumpers to show horses to trotters and pacers, then back to runners again. Farley recalled, "and in a way I profited by it. "He wasn't the most successful trainer of race horses," Mr. But unlike most city children, he had little trouble gaining firsthand experience with horses-his uncle was a professional horseman, and Walter spent much of his time at the stables with him. Walter Farley's love for horses began when he was a small boy living in Syracuse, New York, and continued as he grew up in New York City, where his family moved. Despite only one of them being a reckless psycho, everyone else mindlessly follows his directions (despite them acknowledging how crazy he is) because no one else has any character! I love books about people with secrets being trapped together as tensions run high. But, he's written as such a mustache twirling villian, you can't take him seriously as a threat. Theres only one "bad" character so the only interesting interactions are with him. its about Six kids who are lost in an rv when a sniper blows out their tires and starts hunting them off until they figure out which of them is hiding something from the others (the motivation for the plan is so contrived and stupid) Five of the kids are EXTREMELY dull because they are all selfless and moral. I would have hoped Jackson's first non "a good girls guide to murder" book would have played to her strengths (investigation and procedure) but instead this is a very dialogue heavy, character centered story (which are NOT her strengths). Holly Jackson’s latest thriller follows six teenagers as they drive to Florida instead of flying. A Series of Unfortunate Events BOOK the Fourth There wasn't even time for Lauren to order a drink - not that she particularly liked decaf soy lattes. In fact, she was so late that all the other girls already had their venti decaf soy lattes, each cup nestled into a matching pink cozy (designed by Ashley and handwoven by an artisans' collective in Ecuador), and were waiting impatiently to climb the hill to Miss Gamble's school. But she'd overslept that morning and was late meeting the other Ashleys - Miss Spencer herself, plus best friends Ashley "A.A." Alioto and Ashley "Lili" Li - at the Fillmore Starbucks. Lauren was glad to be back home for the first day of the spring semester. Her mother had determined that they would become part of the international jet set and had spent all of winter break dragging her family to a host of balls and benefits. It was over a month since Ashley Spencer's blowout Super-Sweet Thirteen birthday party, and Lauren Page was still recovering from the excess of that celebration, not to mention exhaustion from her "relaxing" winter vacation in the Italian Alps. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter. She writes regularly for Marie Claire, Gotham, Hamptons, and Lifetime magazines, and has contributed to The New York Times, Glamour, Allure, and McSweeney’s. Her work has been translated into several languages. She also wrote The Ashleys novels and Girl Stays in the Picture. Melissa de la Cruz is the bestselling author of The Blue Bloods series and The Witches of East End. Upon release, the novel received mostly positive reviews, with Publisher's Weekly calling it "swift and humorous." The novel received similar praise from The School Library Journal, which called it "an adventure-quest with a hip edge." It has sold over 2 million copies since publication and was adapted as a major motion picture in 2010. The novel was sold at auction to Miramax Books in 2005 and was later reprinted by two other publishers, Penguin Books and Disney-Hyperion. Haley had been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, which prompted Riordan to create a protagonist, Percy, with ADHD and dyslexia as well. The concept of the novel was inspired by bedtime stories about ancient Greek heroes that Riordan told to his son, Haley, while he was growing up. It is followed by The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian. It is the first of five novels in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. The Lightning Thief is a fantasy-adventure novel by Rick Riordan. Parts of the poem faded away in my memory, but the message didn’t. So although The Lorax scared me in a way that no other picture book did, I still had my parents read it to me until I knew it by heart. Even my beloved Bollygum, that dazzling quest through Australia’s unique landscapes, ended on a bittersweet note about deforestation, with the sacred healing tree vanished and the city looming where it once stood. Blinky Bill might have been a cute show about a cheeky koala, but he still ran from loggers in the opening sequence. Messages about saving the environment were everywhere in the nineties, as guilty previous generations scrambled to implant care for the planet in our psyches in the hope that we might grow up to fix the damage they created. Behind the colourful drawings and playful rhymes lay a deep and bitter truth about the wild places I loved so much: they were dying. It’s a dark little book, and I was an anxious child. But I did respect The Lorax. It’s for these reasons that I was so fascinated by The Lorax as a spiderling.
